We caught up with Touber at the announcement of Cardiff as a stopover port for the 2017-18 race.
There are three teams announced for the next edition of the race. Is this about where you expected to be at this stage?
I think we are really lucky. Compared to this time in the process for the last race we were 1, so three is absolutely awesome. The good thing is, that since we changed this whole process to a one-design fleet, the build of the yacht is in full progress. This gives more opportunity for teams to announce late.
In the past, if you were not building now, you wouldn’t have a chance to win. This edition, you could find your sponsorship late this year and still be very competitive
Is the Volvo Ocean Race affected at all by other sailing events? Are you competing for sailors and sponsors with other events?
I don’t really think so. The good thing about the Volvo Ocean Race is that it has very strong backing from our stakeholders. Therefore we can guarantee the continuity of the race. Already 60% of the ports of the 13th are confirmed.
We’ve had some criticism over the one-design fleet, but we never regretted it. It’s brought back budgets from tens of millions of euros. Now a realistic budget is 10-12 million euros.
Could you actually win it for 12 million euros?
Absolutely. I am 100% convinced.
