Stadium sailing - America's Cup - Extreme Sailing Series - Olympics

What is Stadium Sailing?

The first reference we can find for the phrase 'stadium sailing' is an event staged in Chicago in 1995. 20 fans were used to provide wind for boats designed by Buddy Melges, sailed in the University of Illinois pool. Windsurfing has also been staged indoors with the help of giant fans and ramps for jumps. More recently, the term Stadium Sailing has been used by the Extreme Sailing Series, Olympics, America's Cup World Series and match racing events to try and focus on the spectator friendly nature of their events.
